When it comes to hitting the open road, there’s no rulebook that says you have to stay domestic (although that’s certainly easy and convenient). But for the sake of fantasy, you might wonder where in the world the best road trips are hiding. Well, we’ll give you our top 5.
Garden Route, South Africa
If you can make it to the other side of the world, we recommend the Garden Route of South Africa. This trip sends you along beautiful coastal plains between Mossel Bay and Storms River Mouth. You’ll see rocky shores, sandy beaches and beautiful South African skies. Plus, there are plenty of trails for those afternoons you just need to get out and stretch.
Gobi Desert, Mongolia
Imagine it’s just you, a camper and the Mongolian Desert. Okay, so maybe it’s not for everyone, but there’s certainly something to be said for a change of scenery. The remoteness of the Gobi Dessert, combined with the ability to really offroad makes this trip one you’d remember for a lifetime.
South Island, New Zealand
Both islands that make up New Zealand are beautiful, but the south island will really give you a taste of the country’s remarkable landscape. From dramatic glaciers to majestic canyons to the world-famous Milford Sound, you can spend a week – or a year – driving through New Zealand’s south island.
Costa Smeralda, Sardinia
If the Emerald Coast has got your curiosity piqued, try it by road. Sardinia’s most popular resort area, due to its abundance of turquoise waters and beautiful coastlines, is best seen in late spring or early autumn. Be sure you take some time out of the driver’s seat to bask on Sardinia’s beautiful beaches.
Ring Road, Iceland
If you can’t decide what to see in Iceland, just see all of it. The Ring Road is roughly 1339 kilometers and takes you around the perimeter of the island. You’ll see beautiful, fertile valleys, majestic mountain peaks, volcanos, lava fields and dramatic fjords.
