Ways to Keep Your RV Cool – Without the AC!

April 22, 2015 by Barb Dorn 1 Comment

With summer just around the corner, you’re likely cleaning up the RV and getting ready for some great summer RV camping experiences. After all, there’s nothing better than relaxing at the campsite, cooking dinner over the fire (or on your RV stove) and retiring to a comfortable bed. But if there’s one downside of summer camping, it’s the heat! If you’re off to a desert locale, you’re likely itching for a way to keep cool without cranking the air conditioning.RV Trailer

Ways to Keep Your RV Cool

Here’s what you need to know about cooling it down:

Park it right

The campsite you choose – and the direction you park – can have a lot of impact on the temperature of your RV. If you can, opt for a site with a nice shady tree, then position the RV underneath it. Or position your vehicle so that the side with fewer windows and doors faces the direct sunlight. If you’re shopping for a site online, use the satellite view to find the shadiest area.

Cover those windows

Everyone loves windows, but they tend to let in a lot of heat. What you use to cover those windows can have a big impact on the temperature inside the RV. Try out reflective bubble insulation – a good kind is Reflectix. You might also want to lower the night-shades during the daylight hours to keep the sun out.

Ventilate!

Once the sun goes down (and the outside air gets cooler), open all your storage bays and cupboards to let out built-up heat. If your RV doesn’t already have attic vents, you might want to look into installing these to help keep things cool.

Pay attention to the fridge

Your fridge is keeping your food cool, but it might be keeping your RV hot! Refrigerators actually create a lot of heat when they’re working. If you have an external vent in the roof or side of your vehicle, shade the panels to help keep the area cooler.

Go for LED

When it comes to lighting, LEDs are your friends. Not only will these lights last longer and use less energy, but they also produce less heat. And that’s always a plus in the summer months.

Build a campfire

Your RV’s stove and oven are both super convenient, but they also create a lot of heat. Make dinner cooler – and a lot more fun – by cooking outside. Cleanup is easier too, so everyone wins!
