If you thought summer was the season for awesome road trips, well, it is. But don’t overlook autumn, when gold and brown colors turn America’s mountains and valleys into spectacular fall wonderlands. And with lower gas prices and cooler daytime temperatures, the coming months really might be the best time of year to take to the road.
Awesome Road Trips
Here are a few of the country’s most awesome road trips:
The Catskilss, New York
Boasting 35 mountain peaks over 3,500 feet, six major river systems and 6,000 square miles, this southeastern New York region is absolutely beautiful during the fall months. While it was made famous by the Woodstock festival, today, the area is perfect for the RV-goer. We recommend stopping for lunch by the picturesque fresh farm stands.
The Berkshires, Massachusetts
A much-loved locale for residents of New York, Boston and Philadelphia, this scenic area is famous for beautiful foliage – best appreciated in the autumn months. And with countless spas, antique stores and cafes, “roughing it” isn’t so bad.
Green Mountain Byway, Vermont
Nothing says fall foliage like beautiful Vermont, with its conglomeration of maple, birch and beech trees. The Green Mountain Byway is an 11-mile route that will leave you breathless. And, it just so happens to start out in Waterbury, home to Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. Better pick up a pint in a yummy fall flavor for the drive.
Great Smoky Moutnains, North Carolina & Tennessee
If you’re up for a longer road trip, take the RV on south to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This beautiful landscape is the one of the most visited national parks in America – and for good reason. Its rich orange and red-hued landscape is beautiful during the fall months.
Upper Peninsula, Michigan
You might not have known that Michigan is home to the largest forest system in the Eastern United States, but it is. And in the fall, the whole forest is a flame of colors and trees, ranging from ash and aspen to beech, birch, maple, sycamore and oak. The gorgeous peninsula offers scenic views of beautifully colored waters, too.
Your turn! Where’s the best place to admire autumn’s colors?
